Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

6:00 p.m. – Field Hall

The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb to shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and doing penance…so what does that have to do with pancakes you might ask…Well, eating fattening foods like pancakes with lots of sweet sugary syrup and big pieces of sausage is part of a tradition of a last big feast on the day before the fasting of Lent begins.  The same Lenten connection is at the heart of the last  big feast and party referred to by the French as Mardi Gras…which means Fat Tuesday.  All that being said, we hope you will join your fellow St. John’s parishioners for some fun, fellowship, and fattening food on this last night before Lent.
